Social media dilemma #2 – I’m on LinkedIn, now what?

This is by far one of the easiest social media questions to answer yet it stumbles the best of us…. I’m on LinkedIn, now what? Well, there are lots of ways to answer this question. However, I want to give you one assignment so you’ll actually do it and begin progress on tackling your social media marketing. Ready?

Assignment for LinkedIn to do today:  Write a recommendation. I’m starting with this as your assignment because it’s easy, it will be helpful for the person you select to write the recommendation and it’s an activity that will help you expand your profile. When you’re “working” in social media, I think it’s a good practice to simply be helpful. This works for me because it’s also just a life approach I picked up somewhere (OK, probably should give some props to my parents, thanks Mom). Being helpful reminds people of how they received the information or made the connection which would lead them back to thinking of you…. a good thinking of you.

Now, I know a potential tendency here will be, well, I should just write recommendations for everyone! No. Do not do this and especially don’t randomly sit down and begin writing recommendations just because you read this post. Why… 1) you’ll spend a lot of time doing it and then you’ll think to yourself, gee, this social media stuff just takes too much time and I’m not seeing a return on it. Feel free to write more than one, but set aside a time and day to do so; 2) you don’t want to simply write a recommendation for the action. Write a good one. Think about it more than 30 seconds and really do the person’s recommendation justice. Saying they were great to work with is nice, but not necessarily helpful. Saying the person specifically helped you do X which lead to $ for your business, well, that’s a little more helpful!

So jump in and do just this one assignment. It will get you started and make someone else happy to have your review and attention.
