Giving back and honoring Ruth Lilly

There are lots of ways people make a difference:  time, talent and money just happen to be three of the most common. I personally don’t have a lot of any of the three, but have spent, what some would say, is a considerable amount of at least time and talent in finding ways to give back. Sometimes I get involved in a charity project because it’s helping a cause that’s near to my own passion. More often than not, though, it’s because someone is building on an act that can help the greater good in a way that makes me want to get on board and help expand the reach. I have always been about the reach.

This is why I am so saddened we have lost one of our City’s most amazing women of reach – Ruth Lilly. I never met her, but man would I have loved to. I would have loved to sit for hours and hear about her personal life, her personal times, and would have probably annoyed her with my questions of her decision making process for helping so many so well. I would have sat in awe listening to each and every word.

In a time when many wealthy philanthropists are narrowing their scope and increasing their depth, I’m worried that seeing someone such as Ruth Lilly go is also a passage of her type of giving. I muse to myself that maybe she just gave to each and every place because, like me, she just liked a lot of stuff! She had many interests and wanted to cater to those that serve those worlds. Perfectly OK with that! Today, though, it’s not in style to give so much to so many. It’s probably odd coming from a marketing professional, but the narrow approach to giving, while it definitely has its perks, isn’t preferred by me. Now I can narrow my areas, or categories, if you will, but I find it perfectly OK to give in a dozen areas. Two dozen areas!

The timing of her passing is a reminder to me, as I’m finalizing my personal goals for this year, to continue my reach. I act on my gut, case-by-case, on where I can help the most. I told myself end of 2009 that maybe I should focus more; cut back. Do less, God forbid!  Maybe another year down the road I will find it worthy to narrow my focus and make a large impact, but not now. Not when many need more.

Thank you Ruth Lilly. Thank you for all you have done in our community, in our region, in our nation, and in our world. I know your reach went far. I know your inspiration will continue in me. I know.

The volunteer call

It could probably be said I’m a big fan of volunteering. While I have made a commitment to myself and family to not take on a zillion new things this year, I have been known to lead big volunteer projects, sit on boards that turned in to part time jobs and develop initiatives for organizations throughout the Indianapolis area. When I went to Google this morning, there was a tag line under the search that said “Find an opportunity to volunteer in your community today.” and took me to the All for Good website where Michelle Obama makes a video plea for us to get involved. She says the work that must be done in our nation is too great for us to not all get involved. True to the Obama style, they have worked in some social media efforts that are almost worth while to sign up just to experience their way of leading a project

There is so much good that comes with giving. One of my earliest of volunteer experiences in this community is with the Junior Leauge of Indianapolis. I’ve been in the League 13 years. I have some of my best friends, best experiences and even some of our best clients from that relationship of giving. The League allowed me to know more about the community than I ever would have known trying to figure out the local needs myself.

The Boys and Girls Club is also an organization I just think is amazing. I was a five year board member for the Noblesville, IN, club and I miss it a lot. The kids and families we served were wonderful and I know the Club helped change the lives of kids across the world. I am proud to be involved with that.

I’ll not keep going on and on about why I volunteer, since I’ve already done that in an earlier post, but I will encourage you again to get involved. Check out the new Serve.gov and see if there’s an area of interest for you. Do something you like and have a passion for, or I can almost guarantee you’ll hate the experience. If you’re a non-profit, you can add projects and programs to the list for individuals across the nation to consider for their way to serve. Just do one thing, and make a difference in your own way.

Why do you do all that?

Once someone gets to know me, and the many activities I do very well at getting myself in to, this question is always next:  Why do you do all that? I’m often asked in a not so polite way, like the choice I’ve made for myself to give back and get involved (albeit sometimes too much involved) are simply idiotic. I kindly smile and say, well, it’s just what I do. But, not anymore. I’m going to tell you why I do all that today.

You get out of life what you put in. Many people will not challenge this statement for a project, a job or an association that they join, but for some reason many people don’t look at it as a blanket statement for a way of life. I do. The experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met, the learning about my community and the social challenges within, and the personal and professional development I’ve gained, out weigh any other experience I’ve gotten myself in to in life. I’ll share a few examples…

The Junior League of Indianapolis is an organization I’ve been proud to be a part of for 12 years. These years have been as a member, as a board member and as a committee leader. I’ve managed more than 400+ women’s community involvement in one of my roles and helped them all, yes, all 400+ of them, find their next year’s committee. I did this through managing a committee of 20ish mentors who each managed a group of 20ish members. This was a huge learning experience both in time and people management. I’ve also manged almost 200 women in specific community-realted hands-on projects and helped release over $150,000 in to our Indianapolis community. That’s just cool!

Right now I’m involved with Shanna’s Story, a team of us working to raise money for the Man and Woman of the Year competition for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This group of dynamic people are all new people to me! I went to our kick-off event and knew threee people out of about 75. I always find it an energizing experience to meet new people, hear their story and make connections.

In terms of business, over the years of Silver Square’s history, we have had a dozen clients come to us due to volunteer connections. People I have met through volunteer have experienced our brand and decided we were the kind of people that would be a fit for working together in business too.

So that’s why I get myself involved in many, many things. I really have been given back what I have put in, and life is better because of those experiences. I challenge you to get involved in a cause, mission or organization that you believe in and see how it will add to your life – because it will.
