Social media dilemma #3 – What should I tweet about?

This dilemma makes me smile. As I have talked about in previous posts, more so along advice of what to blog about, I have two things to say: be yourself and keep it simple. With Twitter, it’s even more important to be yourself and keep it simple – you only have 140 characters in which to share your stuff. You learn to get pretty crafty and concise when dealing with only 140 characters. Here are a few other tried and true tips for “tweeting” on Twitter:

  • If you read a lot and find something worthy of sharing, share it. Write a headline or brief summary and supply a shortened link to your find. Sharing information is one of the greatest strengths Twitter offers
  • Tweet about a blog your read, or wrote, and send that link for more information to your followers
  • Literally tell what you’re doing “going out for ice cream” would be something I would like to say often
  • Tell what you’re working on; this could boost your promotion or help someone think of a tactic they should work on
  • Share a success story and link to a case study
  • Write about what’s happening in your office today. Clay often shares what inappropriate song is playing in our work bathroom. I think he’s up to like the 20ish inappropriate song
  • Share your schedule; if you’re heading to a meeting or a conference, share the news so others may join you or learn more about what you’re up to
  • Give feedback. I recently ordered my free sample of VIA coffee from Starbucks and it took longer than told to receive it. I also sent a tweet about what I thought about the coffee’s taste (not to be confused with my new sweet treat – coffee and peeps)
  • Give advice on recent book recommendations or summaries

Those thoughts should give you a few ideas for what to share on Twitter. If you still cannot think of something, listen to the buzz and start following various leaders in your industry and see what they are sharing and doing. Emulate what you like, don’t do what you’re not crazy about. Just go back to the basics and be yourself, and keep it simple.
